Poor thyroid function is a massively under-diagnosed problem in the Western world and a huge contributor to why so many people are tired, overweight and unhealthy. The thyroid gland regulates our metabolism, determining how much fat we burn to produce energy, and how much we store. When your thyroid function is low you will be likely to feel tired and sluggish, even after a good night's sleep. You will probably gain weight, and have trouble losing it no matter how much you diet and exercise. Low thyroid function often causes you to have a low libido and dry skin.
Sometimes these signs are obvious, but often they are more subtle and are put down to simply being signs of aging, stress, and working too hard.
The picture is made even more confusing by the fact that you may have all these symptoms and yet your blood test may show that your thyroid hormone levels are in the normal range. This can happen for several reasons:
- the range is quite wide- you may be at the bottom end when your body really needs to be at the top end of the range.
- Your body may not be utilizing those hormones effectively- the thyroid gland produces two hormones, and when your body needs to it converts the less active form (T4) into the more active form (T3) to "switch on" their function. If your body is not making this conversion effectively then you can have low thyroid function even if your blood has normal T4 levels.
- Your body may even be producing a hormone called Reverse T3, which "switches off" T3 by converting it back into the less active T4.
Any of these situations can cause the symptoms of poor thyroid function, or hypothyroidism mentioned above. As long as your thyroid function is low it will be a struggle to lose weight and find the energy you should have.
